A real life love story between a first class passenger of the Titanic and a man from a lower class has been uncovered involving one of the ill-fated liner's most well known passengers.

Emilio Portaluppi paid £12, 14s, 9d, for a second class ticket, while Madeleine Talmage Astor, wife of tycoon John Jacob Astor, was in first class on a £247, 10s, 9d ticket.

Portaluppi, who died aged 93 in 1974, was always a gentleman and never revealed the true extent of his association with Mrs Astor even after surviving the disaster, but evidence from interviews he gave in his later life have come up with a connection between the two.

He had a crush on Mrs Astor, according to news.discovery.com, and it was through her and her husband that he not just came to be on Titanic, but actually travelled first class as a guest of the Astors.
His story mirrors much of James Cameron's depiction of Jack Dawson in the 1997 film and is thought to be one of the starting points for the movie.
Like Dawson, Portaluppi was a passenger on the ship through a stroke of luck and he was invited to join first class passengers for dinner on the night that Titanic hit the iceberg.
He was a well-respected stonemason having worked on the reliefs of the New York Stock Exchange Building and was considered to have an extraordinary talent.
He had been to Italy to visit his family and was returning to Milford, New Hampshire. He had originally been booked onto one of the White Star line's other ships, Oceanic II.
However, he received a telegram from the Astors inviting him to join them on Titanic as they returned from a holiday in Egypt.
They, it appears, wanted him to use his skills on statues outside their Newport villa.
Claudio Bossi author of a book entitled Titanic, told Discovery News 'Only in the last years of his life, when he returned to Italy, he told the tale of his Titanic journey to local journalists.'
Portaluppi's survival is shrowded in mystery as his own account of events changed with different tellings.
He did not talk about the disaster until late in his life, but the exact circumstances are unknow

That he was on lifeboat number 14 when he was picked up by Carpathia is all we know for certain.
After being awoken by the noise of the iceberg or an explosion in the engine room, he went on deck.
One version Portaluppi gave was that he jumped into the sea and swam to a large piece of floating ice, keeping afloat until he was picked up by one of the lifeboats.
Another, less likely account, was that he went to get into a boat that was half full but fell into the water and swam for two hours until he was plucked from the sea.
In his claim for $25,000 compensation against the ship's owners, he said: 'I was in the water of the Atlantic Ocean for upward of two hours, suffering excruciating pain of body and agony of mind, and have been and will be caused great pain and suffering.'
It was also claimed at the time of the sinking that he had clambered into a lifeboat dressed as a woman. Indeed, when Carpathia sent a list of survivors his name was put down as 'Mrs Portaluppi'.
After surviving Titanic he went on to become a soldier in the Italian Army during World War I and married for a second time despite never divorcing his first wife.
Mrs Astor re-married during World War One, losing the fortune that she inherited from her husband.

When Barack Obama met Genevieve Cook in 1983 at a Christmas party in New York’s East Village, it was the start of his most serious romance yet. But as the 22-year-old Columbia grad began to shape his future, he was also struggling with his identity: American or international? Black or white? Drawing on conversations with both Cook and the president, David Maraniss, in an adaptation from his new Obama biography, has the untold story of the couple’s time together.

arack Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University in 1981, his junior year. Although he left Los Angeles with enough ambitious propulsion to carry him into a more active period, he instead receded into the most existentialist stretch of his life. As he put it himself decades later during an interview in the Oval Office, “I was leading a very ascetic existence, way too serious for my own good.” In most outward ways, compared with what had come before, his life in New York was a minimalist one, without the sprawling cast of characters that had surrounded him at Oxy and in Hawaii and Indonesia. He felt no attachment to Columbia or to the first jobs he landed after graduation. But it would be a misreading to say that he was tamping down his ambitions during that period. Just the opposite, in fact. If anything, his sense of destiny deepened. He was conducting an intense debate with himself over his past, present, and future, an internal struggle that he shared with only a few close friends, including his girlfriends, Alex McNear and Genevieve Cook, who kept a lasting record, one in letters, the other in her journal.

t is exponentially easier to look back at a life than to live it forward. In retrospect it becomes apparent that New York was crucial to Obama. If he had not quite found his place yet, he was learning in which directions not to go and how to avoid turns that would lead him off the path and into traps from which it would be hard to escape. Even when he was uncertain about much else, Obama seemed hyper-alert to avoiding a future

hedid not want.
At age 20, Obama was a man of the world. He had never been to south-central Kansas or western Kenya, the homelands of his ancestors, yet his divided heritage from Africa and the American heartland had defined him from the beginning. He could not be of one place, rooted and provincial. From his years living in Indonesia, where he was fully immersed in Javanese schools and culture; from his adolescence in Hawaii, where he was in the polyglot sea of hapa and haole, Asians and islanders; from his mother’s long-term commitment to development work overseas; from his friendship with Pakistani students at Occidental and his extended visit to their country—from all of these he had experienced far more global diversity than the average college junior. He knew the ways of different cultures better than he knew himself.

bama’s first apartment in New York, which he shared with Phil Boerner, a friend from Oxy, was at 142 West 109th Street. Heat and hot water were scarce commodities. When the nights turned colder, the roommates took to sleeping bags for warmth and spent as little waking time in the apartment as possible, holing up in Butler Library, at 114th, parts of which were open all night. Some mornings, eager to flee their quarters, they walked to the corner of Broadway and 112th to eat at Tom’s Restaurant, the place immortalized later as the fictional Monk’s, a familiar meeting place for the characters on Seinfeld. A full breakfast went for $1.99.

The loneliness of Obama’s New York existence emerged in his letters to Alex McNear, a young woman from Occidental who had enchanted Obama when she was co-editing the literary magazine Feast, and with whom he reconnected when she spent the summer of 1982 in New York. Alex had always been fond of Barry, as she called him, and “thought he was interesting in a very particular way. He really worked his way through an idea or question, turned it over, looked at it from all sides, and then he came to a precise and elegant conclusion.” When Alex came to New York, she gave Obama a call. They met at an Italian restaurant on Lexington Avenue, and, as she remembered the night, “we sat and talked and ate and drank wine. Or at least I drank wine. I think he drank something stronger. It was one of those dark, old Italian restaurants that don’t exist in New York anymore. It was the kind of place where they leave you alone. I remember thinking how happy I felt just talking to him, that I could talk to him for hours. We walked slowly back to my apartment, on 90th, and said good-bye. After that we started spending much more time together.”
Alex remembered it as a summer of walking miles through the city, lingering over meals at restaurants, hanging out at their apartments, visiting art museums, and talking about life. She recalled one intense conversation in particular as they stood outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Obama was obsessed with the concept of choice, she said. Did he have real choices in his life? Did he have free will? How much were his choices circumscribed by his background, his childhood, his socio-economic situation, the color of his skin, the expectations that others had of him? How did choice influence his present and future? Later, referring back to that discussion, he told Alex in a letter that he had used the word “choice” “as a convenient shorthand for the way my past resolves itself. Not just my past, but the past of my ancestors, the planet, the universe.” His obsession with the concept of choice, he said in a later interview at the White House, “was a deliberate effort on my part to press the pause button, essentially, and try to orient myself and say, ‘Okay, which way, where am I going?’ ”

The long-distance relationship with Alex McNear after that summer—they would drift apart as time wore on—was conducted mostly through a series of passionate letters sent between his apartment (he was then living at 339 East 94th, in Manhattan) and hers, at 2210 Ridgeview Avenue, in Eagle Rock, California. By her account, the passion was as much about ideas and words as about their romance—what she later called “that dance of closeness through language.” Alex was interested in postmodern literary criticism, and her arguments brimmed with the deconstructionist ideas of Jacques Derrida, the French philosopher. In one letter she told Obama that she was writing a paper in her modern-poetry class at Occidental about T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land.” His reply wove its way through literature, politics, and personal philosophy:

I haven’t read “The Waste Land” for a year, and I never did bother to check all the footnotes. But I will hazard these statements—Eliot contains the same ecstatic vision which runs from Münzer to Yeats. However, he retains a grounding in the social reality/order of his time. Facing what he perceives as a choice between ecstatic chaos and lifeless mechanistic order, he accedes to maintaining a separation of asexual purity and brutal sexual reality. And he wears a stoical face before this. Read his essay on Tradition and the Individual Talent, as well as Four Quartets, when he’s less concerned with depicting moribund Europe, to catch a sense of what I speak. Remember how I said there’s a certain kind of conservatism which I respect more than bourgeois liberalism—Eliot is of this type. Of course, the dichotomy he maintains is reactionary, but it’s due to a deep fatalism, not ignorance. (Counter him with Yeats or Pound, who, arising from the same milieu, opted to support Hitler and Mussolini.) And this fatalism is born out of the relation between fertility and death, which I touched on in my last letter—life feeds on itself. A fatalism I share with the western tradition at times. You seem surprised at Eliot’s irreconcilable ambivalence; don’t you share this ambivalence yourself, Alex?

The beautiful Queen Marie of Romania was a flamboyant character, egotistical, narcissistic, but in a way down to earth and really quite loveable. Married at age seventeen and packed off to Romania as the wife of the inept, unattractive Crown Prince Ferdinand, Marie had to make the best of things, and she did!

Hannah Pakula's beautifully written book will carry you through Marie's turbulent life with gusto, but the saga is complicated- as Queen Victoria's granddaughter, son of the enigmatic Prince Alfred "Affie" and the equally enigmatic Grand duchess Marie, daughter of Tsar Alexander II. Marie was related to everybody and knew everybody.
The most fascinating parts of this fine biography for me were Marie's relationships with the famous royal personalities of her era. For instance, Empress Alexandra the wife of Nicholas II and first cousin to Marie was Marie's opposite- cold, scheming, secretive and socially maladjusted. She didn't cut any ice with the self-confident Marie and Marie didn't hesitate in voicing her opinion of the Empress. Oddly, arrangements were made for Marie's oldest son, the Crown Prince Carol and Alexandra's oldest daughter, Olga, to meet in hopes of a future marriage. However, the young people were not attracted to each other.

Marie has delicious comments to make about Queen Victoria and Pakula explores the relationship between the Queen and this granddaughter. Although Marie wrote rather purple prose, you really get the feeling for what it must have been like to have been a little girl, even a confident little girl such as Marie, approaching the inner sanctum of the great Queen. The Queen must have been rather like a Buddha, a goddess, of this world

but not quite of it.
This is a very interesting work on Marie, Queen of Romania. The main focus is on where she fit into the social whirl to inclunde the international diplomatic circuit of the era between the wars. Hannah Pakula wrote this book about 25 years ago so there are some perspectives that might be useful for the current reader (communism no longer exists in Eastern Europe). However in terms of accessible books on famous people in Romanian history, this book is probably in the top ten.

The book chronicles Marie's journey from Queen Victoria's granddaughter to international power broker in the Balkans. It is worth noting that Pakula seems to specialize in books about women who are married to famous men who eventually come into their own due to their own qualities (Victoria, mother of Emperor Frederick of Germany and Madame Chaing Kai Sheck).

Where the book might have been improved would have been more on some of the political figures who interacted with Marie. The book did send me off to Wikipedia to look up Marthe Bibesco, probably aone of the world's most fascinating women of all time, the two Bratianus, father and son who dominated Romanian politics for sixty years, Prince Stirbey, who was always around when Marie needed him. The book would have been better if it focused on Romanian affairs and Marie's relationship to them rather than the various comings and goings of the romantic frustrations fo the various royal houses between the 1890s-1930s.

For all its shortcomings this is an interesting book dealing with a figure who now is apparently coming into her own in Romania and is remembered now for her diplomatic offensive at the Vedrsailles Conference which gained Romania the four provinces that had eluded it for more than three hundred years. It is this accomplishment and not her style and the fullness of her life that will merit books being written about her.

Like Hannah Pakula's "An Uncommon Woman" (the biography of the Empress Frederick), "The Last Romantic" is an enthralling read with numerous incidental details which combined to get right to the heart of the fascinating Queen Marie of Roumania. The richness of the writing is a fitting tribute to the passionate and romantic Marie, who, in spite of many personal tragedies, continues to shine as one of the most intriguing women of her age. Other members of the family are brought in to the story in a lucid and interesting manner. All in all, it is a book to return to often!

I have read many royal biographies and most of them are just terrible. This biography of the enchanting Queen Marie is just wonderful. It is beautifully written and researched. For those who love to escape to

another time and place this is a must read.
Beautifully written, a book that encompasses a great deal of European history, including a corner of East Europe much overlooked. It's a sensitive biography of Queen Marie, who was much loved by her subjects (she learned Romanian as an adult and the people adored her for this and for all the kindnesses she showed them). She was one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters (five of Queen Victoria's granddaughters ended up as queens on European thrones). She was talented, beautiful, had the ability to charm people, and this helped her help her husband in his royal function --he was not a very effectual ruler. The content and the writing had the power to draw me into that world and keep me there until I finished the book. It's one of my top ten books of all time. I learned so much from it.

Carré Otis was a 20-year-old supermodel when she auditioned for the film Wild Orchid and met co-star Mickey Rourke.
Now remarried, drug-free and the mother of two daughters, Otis has committed her troubling memories to paper.
She writes of how she knew there was trouble early on in the relationship, well before they married.
Otis recounts: 'The movie wrapped, I ended up playing house for Mickey. I knew that something was very wrong with this new life of mine.
'By everyone else’s standards, I had everything I could possibly want: a big, beautiful home, a relationship with a famous actor. But I had to stop counting there.

That was all there was.
And she also shed a light on Rouke's jealous temper.
'Mickey, for instance, had seen a naked photo of me, shot by the famously gay photographer Steven Meisel, for Vanity Fair. He was furious,' she explains in one excerpt.
'Everyone can see your ass! That’s my ass. And no one else’s,' Mickey said and to prove his point, he sent two thugs to hunt down Meisel, and when they found him in a New York City elevator, they stole his signature floppy hat and took Polaroids of the terrified photographer.
'Word quickly got out that I was a liability to work with,' she remembered.
But the most troubling incident occurred when Otis discovered Rourke with a gun.

She wrote: 'The next day, we went out to dinner. We were almost at the restaurant when I looked down and saw a .357 Magnum on the floor near my feet.'
After telling her then boyfriend to get rid of the weapon, Otis then unwittingly carried it in her bag until it discharged at Rourke's home.
The bullet lodged just two inches from her heart.
'She remembers the scene: 'Wait! Help me!” I finally cried out, forcing the words to come. 'You gotta help me . . . I’m bleeding. I’m bleeding really bad.'
I wailed. It hurt so much to move.
'This is a nightmare. Clean this up!' Mickey was agitated. I could tell he had grave concerns that the press would get wind of the incident.
I panicked, wondering which was more important: my life or covering up the fact that I’d been shot with Mickey Rourke’s gun?'
Otis then talks about how the guilt forced a separation, but the magnetic couple were soon reunited... after a disturbing proposal in June 1992.
The blonde recalls: 'Before I knew what he was doing, he got down on one knee. “Marry me, Carré.'
'Jesus, Mickey. Wait. I haven’t seen you in months!' I was starting to feel panicked. 'I need time, some time to think about this.'
'No. You answer me now,' he said firmly. Standing up, he went to the back of the car and opened the trunk. “I can’t live without you,” he said again, pulling out a long sword wrapped in beautiful Japanese cloth.
'What’s that?' I asked.
'It’s a hari-kari knife,' he replied, unwrapping it. The long metal sword caught the afternoon light. Mickey stared into my eyes. 'Answer me or I will die.'

A source tells us that the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and her man just recently took their status to the romantic level after spending some time getting to know each other as friends. "What started off as a friendship has turned romantic, but it's all very new," the insider dished. The source adds that Kris and Corey met in Spain at designer Riccardo Tisci's 40th birthday party back in August in Ibiza.
Another source tells E! News that Kris and Corey met through mutual friends, adding "He's a really great guy...He's so nice and a very responsible man. He doesn't drink or party. He is very caring about other people and generally just an all round good guy."

Kris and Corey even recently jetted off to Mexico together for a romantic vacation alone. While south of the border, the couple spent some time with Kris' pal Joe Francis. Francis posted a cute video of Kris enjoying some fun ocean activities with the caption, "LOL!! @krisjenner trying to fly board @casaaramara Thank you #VallartaAdventures."
Following their several-day getaway, the lovebirds were photographed getting their PDA on after touching down at the airport in Van Nuys, Calif. In the cute pics, a smiley Kris couldn't hide her happiness while hugging and cuddling Corey. "They looked like a loved-up couple," an eyewitness told E! News. "In the brief time they were loading up luggage, Corey put his arm around Kris and she reached out to hold his hand."

Born Katheryn Hudson, Perry grows up the middle child of two devout Christian ministers from Santa Barbara. "I was raised in a very pseudo-strict religious household where the only thing on the menu was [gospel standards like] 'Oh Happy Day,' 'His Eye Is on the Sparrow' and 'Amazing Grace'," Perry later tells MTV. The sheltered teen begins taking singing lessons and traveling to Nashville, where her parents have contacts in the gospel recording industry.
At 16, Perry releases a Christian pop album as Katy Hudson. "It reached literally maybe 100 people," the singer tells EW, "and then the label went bankrupt." A second venture in 2004, this time with mega-hit production team The Matrix of Avril Lavigne fame, falls through weeks before the album's release.
Perry scores a record deal with Capital Records and ditches her Christian fan base for mainstream stardom with her pop debut, One of the Boys. The singer, who writes or cowrites every track on the album, makes waves with her '40s pin-up looks, risqué themes and tongue-in-cheek lyrics. "They're not meant to be 'Oh, no!' songs! They are my life, and I guess my life is a little bit 'Oh, no,'" she tells EW. "I Kissed a Girl," a flirty, pop-rock fusion, spends weeks atop the charts in more than 20 countries.
Perry begins dating Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy. "She's super hot," he tells PEOPLE of falling for his Warped tour tourmate. After a year of dating and even exchanging promise rings, they call it quits. "It hurts right now," Perry says during a concert after the split. "When you breakup with someone you move on. You don't really want to move on...but you have to because they don't give you any choice." The newly single star is eventually linked to musicians Benji Madden and Josh Groban.
After earning a Grammy nomination for best female pop vocal performance for "I Kissed a Girl", Perry launches her first headline tour, Hello Katy, complete with a huge inflatable cat head and 3-D fruit. "You're gonna see me with all kinds of different things," she tells the AP. In February, she also takes the Grammy stage to perform "I Kissed a Girl" amid giant colorful fruit, gyrating female dancers and user-submitted fan videos.
After joking about having a crush on her at the VMAs, British comedian Russell Brand and Perry take their new romance public. Three months later, Brand orchestrates a special New Year surprise in India, where he asks Perry to marry him with a ring hidden in flowers.

A Dream Comes True
Covered by a cloud of cotton candy, Perry releases her second pop album, Teenage Dream. On the strength of its lead single "California Gurls," the singer's sophomore effort tops the Billboard 200 albums chart and earns her four Grammy nominations, including the coveted album of the year award. "It's really validating," she tells the AP of her album, which also earns a 2011 Grammy nomination for record of the year for her inspirational hit "Firework".

Becoming Mrs. Brand
Perry and Brand tie the knot in a "very private and spiritual ceremony" held at a resort in India, the newlyweds announce in a statement. "Love between two people is the most spectacular yet ordinary thing in the world," the groom said in the days leading up to the nuptials. "We'll get married in front of our friends and family…and keep it sort of normal." The lavish affair, which lasted several days, treated guests to safaris, song and dance numbers and several parties.
Perry lets the world in on her life with the release of the concert documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me. In the film, cameras capture the singer behind the scenes of her world tour and document the breakup of her marriage to Russell Brand – which prompts the singer, 27, to tell reporters, "It's not always very fun [watching the footage]."

Perry gets the rumor mills buzzing when she's photographed leaving L.A.'s Chateau Marmont with singer John Mayer. Though the pair's romance seems to cool off shortly after, they reunite and later spend the holidays together. "They've spent a lot of time together and really enjoy each other's company," a source says. "John is entirely focused on Katy."
For the second time, Perry and Mayer split, only a month after the "Your Body Is a Wonderland" crooner describes their relationship to CBS Sunday Morning as "something that's very human." But by July 4, the on-again, off-again pair appears to reconcile once more, with Perry sharing an affectionate photo of the two over Instagram.
Buoyed by the success of lead single "Roar," Perry's fourth album, Prism, sells 286,000 copies in its first week to top the Billboard albums chart. "Perry has never sounded better, confidently belting it out or revealing more nuanced shades of her voice," writes PEOPLE music critic, Chuck Arnold.

The on-again, off-again relationship comes to an end when Perry and Mayer split for the third time. "Relationships are kind of like riding a bull – you hold on for dear life," the "Dark Horse" singer says in December while promoting her and Mayer's music video for the duet "Who You Love." "Sometimes you get a little buck here and there."
