Limited to bit parts at first, Gardner slowly worked her way up to larger roles. But it wasn't until she was loaned to Universal Studios to appear as seductress Kitty Collins in 1946's The Killers that Gardner became a star. That success led to the actress landing better parts in movies like The Hucksters (1947), Show Boat (1951) and The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952). She also appeared in Mogambo (1953), a role that earned Gardner her only Academy Award nomination.

Even as her acting career developed, Gardner's beauty was always a large part of her appeal. For her role in The Barefoot Contessa (1954), as a dancer whose rags-to-riches story echoed Gardner's own, MGM touted her as "The World's Most Beautiful Animal."

Off-Screen Life and Loves
Ava Gardner's life in Hollywood was also busy off camera. She met actor Mickey Rooney on her first studio visit in California. Rooney, then at the height of his career, ardently pursued her. As Gardner, heeding her North Carolina upbringing, was determined to remain a virgin until marriage, they wed in 1942, after first receiving permission from MGM. The two separated a year later, amid Gardner's accusations that Rooney had been unfaithful.
With the end of her first marriage, the down-to-earth Gardner's reputation for drinking, smoking and partying grew. She also became close with playboy Howard Hughes. Although Gardner refused to sleep with Hughes, she remained an object of fascination for the reclusive man for years. Gardner had another short marriage, from 1945 to 1946, to bandleader Artie Shaw. During their time together, Shaw tried to mold Gardner, who was already insecure about her lack of education, with suggested reading lists.
Gardner rarely shied away from romantic entanglements, and her partners ranged from co-stars to Spanish matadors. Her real-life femme fatale reputation peaked when she became involved with singer Frank Sinatra, whom she considered the love of her life. After Sinatra left his wife to be with Gardner, the two married in 1951. Unfortunately, their passion often boiled over into jealous fights, and the two separated and reconciled several times before finally divorcing in 1957.

Life After MGM
Gardner left her MGM contract in 1958, but continued to appear in movies, including On the Beach (1959) and The Night of the Iguana (1964). Gardner received fewer job offers as the years passed, working only sporadically.
After living in Spain for several years, Gardner moved to London, England, in 1968. She remained close to Sinatra, who called her hospital room after her 1986 stroke and later helped with her medical bills. Ava Gardner died from pneumonia in London on January 25, 1990, at the age of 67. She was buried next to her parents in North Carolina.

Each stride I took sent me ever closer to him forever. I took his mouth with a savage intensity I had never known and then I lavished my kisses upon his chest, licking his blood and sweat in long, broad laps.

“Look alive people! Zombies on the lawn!” Roscoe, my black cat, yelled as he raced back into the house. His nails dug into Mom’s newly restored pine oak floors as he headed for the kitchen. She’ll be pissed about that for sure!

I threw down my Seventeen magazine and yanked the nearby curtain by the chair I was sitting in to get a good look at the lawn. “Not again,” I grumbled. This new job of watching the neighborhood was starting to get on my nerves.

I surveyed the lawn. The newspaper remained uncollected; a chore our dog, Rex refused to take seriously. Mom’s yellow Gerber daisies stood at attention, basking in the sun under the mailbox. The freshly mowed grass looked as green as ever. I loved how thick the Saint Augustine was this time of year. No one else in the neighborhood had anything like it. If they only knew what Dad used for fertilizer, wouldn’t that be a topic of discussion at the next neighborhood meeting?

“What zombies?” I finally shouted. I didn’t see anything out of the unusual.

As I crossed the hall, I surveyed the claw marks Roscoe had made. Three thousand dollars for new hardwood floors and they were already damaged. I knew we were lucky to have a cat like Roscoe and a dog like Rex, but sometimes it was too much. I wasn’t looking forward to hearing Mom bi**h about that.

Roscoe was a self-taught assassin and knew how to fight intruders, but he didn’t seem to appreciate any of the home improvements Mom and Dad had made on our Victoria home.

Rex, a shapeshifter slayer, was far more civil and obedient to Mom and Dad. Typical dog mentality, Roscoe reminded me.

“Dozen of them from the east. I saw one by the driveway just now!” Roscoe’s thin voice drifted down from the top of the stairs and raked across my ears. He was already in position. “Good kitty,” I thought to myself. We needed more cats like Roscoe.

To save time, I snapped my eyelids in a succession of three times and materialized in the kitchen. Being born a witch worked for me on some days. Other days, not so much. I wasn’t that good with my skills yet, my mom reminded me often enough. Luckily, I had drawn the blinds earlier to keep the room cool for afternoon cooking, so hopefully Mrs. Bradbury, our annoying next door neighbor, did not see me pop from one room to the next. I didn’t have the energy to deal with her hysterics today. Mom and Dad were at work so it was up to me to protect the place.

But zombies made Mrs. Bradbury hysterical and I hated to hold her hand after she calmed down. It was annoying. I just wanted to make my Hurricane Punch in peace, dispel the zombies on my lawn, and get back to reading my magazine or studying up on my spells. These days, reading or studying were the only activities I enjoyed.
